YouTube & Video SEO

Search-led video strategy: keyword-driven production, Shorts and long-form, video found on YouTube and on your site.

YouTube SEO services make a channel discoverable on purpose rather than by accident. We treat YouTube as a search engine and a recommendation engine at once: every video starts from a target query or a suggested-traffic hypothesis, is produced in the format that fits that goal, and is optimised for the signals YouTube actually uses, namely thumbnail and title click-through, watch time and session continuation. The same videos are embedded on your website with VideoObject schema so Google video search finds them too.

/01 · Definition

What is YouTube SEO?

YouTube SEO is the practice of planning, producing and optimising videos so that they are found through YouTube search, suggested videos, the Shorts feed and Google video results. It covers video keyword research, titles, thumbnails, descriptions, chapters and captions, channel and playlist architecture, and the embedding of videos on your website with VideoObject structured data. Unlike web SEO, the ranking signals are mostly behavioural: click-through rate on the thumbnail and title, watch time, and whether viewers keep watching afterwards.

Most channels we assess have a back catalogue published because someone had something to say, not because anyone was searching for it. Video SEO starts with the decision about what to film and continues after upload, because YouTube widens distribution only when the first small audience responds.

/03 · Problems we solve

Problems we solve

  • Videos exist, discovery does not

Views come almost entirely from your own email list and social posts; search and suggested traffic are near zero because no video targets a query.

  • No keyword-led production

Topics are chosen in meetings, not from demand, and titles are written after the edit, so the video answers a question nobody typed.

  • Video lives only on YouTube

No video pages, no VideoObject schema and no video sitemap on the website, so Google video search and your own product or treatment pages get nothing from the production investment.

How YouTube ranks videos: search versus suggested

YouTube has two main discovery systems, and they reward different things. YouTube search matches the query against the title, description, captions and topic, then reorders results by how satisfied previous searchers were; it is won by precise query targeting. Suggested videos, beside the player and on the home feed, are a recommendation system that weighs what the viewer watched before, what similar viewers watched next and whether the candidate keeps the session going; it is earned by consistency of topic, by playlists that make the next video obvious, and by endings that hand the viewer to something related.

Both share one gate: the click. Impressions click-through rate and average view duration are therefore the first two numbers we optimise, and the strategy decides per video whether the goal is search, suggested or Shorts, because one video rarely wins all three.

Video keyword research

Video keyword research is not a web keyword list copied into YouTube. We combine YouTube's search suggestions, the search terms reported in YouTube Studio, Google results that show a video carousel and the top titles of competitor channels into a demand map, then classify each query by intent (learn, compare, buy, troubleshoot) and by whether Google surfaces video for it.

Queries are scored by fit and by what the current winners look like: old videos with weak thumbnails are beatable, large creators with a daily cadence may not be. The output is a prioritised topic list with a format per topic, which becomes the production calendar. Turkish-language YouTube is less competitive than English in most professional niches, so many clients start in Turkish; clinic queries in Arabic and Persian are researched separately.

The production line: Shorts and long-form

A production line is a repeatable sequence from topic to publish, so output does not depend on inspiration. The long-form lane produces search and series videos from a brief that states the target query, the title promise, the chapter structure and the calls to action. The Shorts lane produces vertical videos that are either native, filmed with a hook in the first second, or cut-downs of long-form chapters that stand on their own.

One shoot day yields a long-form video, several Shorts, a thumbnail set and clips for the website and social channels, packaged per platform. Cadence matters more than volume: two long-form videos and six Shorts every month for a year beat twelve videos in January and nothing in spring. We size the calendar to what your team can sustain.

Titles, thumbnails, chapters and captions

The title and thumbnail are one unit: the thumbnail earns the glance, the title confirms the promise. Titles contain the target query in natural form and state a specific outcome; thumbnails follow a channel system (face or product, three to five words, consistent colour logic). YouTube's built-in thumbnail test, where available, and controlled swaps on older videos give data instead of opinions.

Chapters are timestamps in the description that split the video into labelled sections; they improve retention and give YouTube and Google named segments that can appear in search results as key moments. Captions are both an accessibility requirement and a text layer the systems read: we replace auto-generated captions with corrected transcripts, add subtitle tracks per language, and reuse the transcript for the description and the companion article.

Channel architecture and playlists

Channel architecture is the equivalent of site architecture: how topics are grouped so viewers and YouTube's systems understand what the channel is about. We define topic pillars, map every existing video to one, retire or re-title the misfits, and rewrite the channel page, trailer and sections around those pillars. Playlists are the main tool for suggested traffic within your own channel: a series playlist with a clear order, an end screen pointing to the next episode and a title that targets a query of its own turns a single view into a session.

Video on your website: VideoObject schema and Google video search

Videos embedded on your own pages can rank in Google video results when the page carries VideoObject structured data. Google Search Central documents the required and recommended properties: name, description, thumbnailUrl, uploadDate, duration, contentUrl or embedUrl, and optional Clip and SeekToAction markup for key moments. We implement the markup as JSON-LD on dedicated video pages or on the pages the video supports, and validate it with the Rich Results Test.

Three rules make the embed useful: the video must be the subject of the page or clearly support it, the thumbnail must be reachable by Googlebot, and the page must be in a video sitemap. Video pages then become internal-link targets, transcripts become articles, and the content hub plans both formats from one keyword map.

YouTube Ads synergy

Organic and paid YouTube work best as one calendar. Organic videos show which topics, hooks and formats people actually watch; those become the creative for skippable in-stream, bumper and in-feed campaigns. Paid distribution in turn gives a new video its initial audience and reaches people who would never search. We plan YouTube Ads with the Google Ads team so that targeting, remarketing lists built from channel viewers and conversion tracking are shared; the campaigns run under the Google Ads management service.

/12 · Measurement and KPIs

Measurement in YouTube Studio

Reported monthly from YouTube Studio, Search Console (video pages) and GA4 with one scorecard. No metric is promised at a level; the point is to see which lever to pull next.

  • Reach

Impressions and click-through rate by traffic source

Whether YouTube shows the videos and whether people choose them, by search, suggested, Shorts and external.

  • Retention

Average view duration and retention curves

Where viewers leave, by chapter; this drives the edit and the thumbnail promise.

  • Discovery

    Search terms and suggested sources

The queries and videos that send traffic, checked against the keyword map.

  • Site

    Video-page visibility and assisted conversions

/13 · Method and process

How we run a YouTube SEO engagement

Five steps; the first two are an assessment you can act on without us.

  1. 01

    Channel and catalogue audit

Every published video is reviewed for traffic source, retention and targeting, alongside channel metadata, playlists and the website's video presence; the output is a scored list of fixes and gaps.

  2. 02

Video keyword research and topic map

Demand is mapped from YouTube suggestions, Studio search terms, Google video carousels and competitor channels, scored for winnability and assigned a format from the decision table.

  3. 03

    Production line setup

Briefs, a thumbnail system, caption and chapter templates, Shorts cut-down rules and a calendar sized to your team, or a specification for an external crew.

  4. 04

Launch, first-hour routine and website integration

Each video ships with tested metadata, a pinned comment, end screens and a distribution checklist; we watch the first hours for click-through and retention, swap thumbnails when the data says so, and embed the video on your site with VideoObject markup.

  5. 05

    Monthly review and ads hand-off

A channel-health report from YouTube Studio and Search Console, next month's calendar, winning topics handed to the Google Ads team, and a quarterly re-run of the keyword map.

/14 · Common challenges

Common challenges in YouTube SEO projects

  • No one on camera

Many B2B teams have no presenter. Screen-recorded tutorials, voice-over explainers and interview formats work; we choose what the team can sustain.

  • A back catalogue that drags

Old videos with poor retention weigh on a channel's averages. We re-title, re-thumbnail, re-chapter or unlist them case by case.

  • Regulated topics

Medical and financial videos need the same claim review as web content, and YouTube's health-content policies apply. Scripts are reviewed before the shoot, not after.

How SEO Evaluate approaches YouTube and video SEO

We invest in search and suggested demand rather than in subscriber counts, because a continuously searched video compounds for years while a one-off spike does not. A steady calendar of videos that answer real queries builds the channel; that organic base is then layered with YouTube Ads so paid and organic reach grow together. We do not promise view, subscriber or ranking levels. What we commit to is a documented channel strategy, a production line your team can run, tested metadata on every video, validated video pages and a monthly report.

/16 · Frequently asked questions

YouTube SEO services: frequently asked questions

What is YouTube SEO and how is it different from web SEO?

YouTube SEO is the planning, production and optimisation of videos so that they are found through YouTube search, suggested videos, Shorts and Google video results. Unlike web SEO it relies mostly on viewer behaviour, especially thumbnail and title click-through, watch time and session continuation, rather than on links.

How do videos get discovered on YouTube?

Through four main sources: YouTube search, suggested videos beside the player and on the home feed, the Shorts feed, and external traffic from your website, email and social posts. Search rewards precise query targeting, suggested rewards topical consistency, Shorts rewards an immediate hook, so each video is assigned a primary source.

What is a sensible Shorts strategy for a business channel?

Treat Shorts as a reach and testing lane, not the whole channel. Publish native Shorts with a hook in the first second and standalone cut-downs of long-form chapters, point each one to the long-form video that answers the next question, and watch the viewed-versus-swiped-away ratio.

How do you test titles and thumbnails?

With YouTube's built-in thumbnail test where the channel has access to it, and controlled swaps on older videos with a decision log otherwise. The metric is impressions click-through rate from the same traffic source over a comparable window, read together with average view duration so a thumbnail does not win clicks by over-promising.

How do we put videos on our website properly?

Embed each video on the page it supports or on a dedicated video page, add VideoObject structured data as JSON-LD with the properties Google Search Central lists (name, description, thumbnailUrl, uploadDate, duration and a content or embed URL), make sure the thumbnail is crawlable and include the pages in a video sitemap.

How long does YouTube SEO take to show results?

Fixes to existing videos (thumbnails, titles, chapters) can change click-through and retention within days. New search videos typically need weeks to settle in results, and suggested traffic builds over months as topical consistency accumulates. We plan in quarters and review the calendar monthly.
