Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) & AI Search Visibility

Be the source ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews and Gemini cite when buyers ask: measured, structured, honest about limits.

AI search visibility is whether your brand is retrieved, understood and cited when buyers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini or Copilot a question in your category. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the method behind it, and it rewards different things from classic ranking. As a generative engine optimization agency we measure your current visibility with prompt panels, trace each gap to its cause, rebuild content and entity signals so they can be cited, and re-measure every quarter. We do not promise citations; nobody honest can.

/01 · Definition

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a brand's content retrievable, understandable and citable by generative answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini and Copilot. AI search visibility, often shortened to AI visibility, is the outcome: whether your brand appears, and appears correctly, when a buyer asks a question in your category. GEO covers passage-level content structure, entity signals, structured information, search-crawler access and prompt-based measurement, and extends classic SEO rather than replacing it.

When a buyer asks ChatGPT which Istanbul clinics treat international patients, the answer is a synthesis of a few sources, some of them cited, not a ranked list of links. Whether you are one of them is related to your Google rankings, not decided by them: the engine retrieves passages, resolves your brand as an entity, and cites you only when the passage stands on its own.

What is a generative engine optimization agency? A team that treats those stages as a method: it measures where you are and are not cited, explains why, restructures content and entity signals, and re-measures. The same work is sold as GEO agency, AEO agency (answer engine optimization), AI search optimization or LLM visibility. Where SEO targets the ranking and the click, GEO targets retrieval and citation inside a generated answer, shifting weight to passage-level clarity, consistent entities, structured information and third-party mentions.

/03 · Problems we solve

Problems we solve

  • Competitors are cited, you are not

Category prompts return two or three competitors as sources while your name never appears. Their pages carry self-contained passages; yours read as marketing copy.

  • Cited with wrong or outdated information

The assistant describes a discontinued service, an old location or the wrong category, because brand facts conflict across the web and your entity signals are weak.

  • Plenty of content, nothing citable

Long articles exist, but definitions are buried, headings are vague and there are no tables or FAQs. The engine cannot extract a passage it trusts.

  • Search crawlers blocked by accident

robots.txt, a WAF rule or bot protection blocks OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot because training and search access share one rule.

  • An inconsistent entity

Brand name, founders, locations and service list differ between the site, LinkedIn, directories and reference sources; markup contradicts them.

  • No measurement beyond anecdote

No prompt panel, no citation share and no AI-referral channel in GA4, so nobody knows which change worked.

How AI search retrieves and cites content

Generative engines first retrieve candidate passages from a search index or by fetching pages live, then synthesise an answer and attach citations. Google documents that AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on the standard Google index, that AI Mode splits a question into several sub-queries (query fan-out), that no special markup is required, and that snippet controls such as nosnippet and max-snippet apply (Google Search Central). A page that is not indexed, or whose snippet is restricted, cannot be cited there.

OpenAI documents a separate search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, which respects robots.txt and picks up changes in roughly 24 hours; a user-initiated agent, ChatGPT-User, which fetches a page when a user asks about it; and a training crawler, GPTBot, a separate token, so a site can allow search while disallowing training (OpenAI documentation). A robots.txt line that opts out of training but also blocks the search crawler removes the site from ChatGPT search entirely.

The second stage is understanding. Models resolve your brand as an entity from Organization and Person markup, sameAs-linked profiles, directories, press and industry sources. When those contradict each other, the model omits you or describes you wrongly. Entity visibility is the half of GEO that content work alone does not cover.

The third stage is citation. Engines favour passages that answer the question on their own, open with a clear definition and contain concrete names, steps or figures; definition blocks, tables and FAQ sections make them easy to extract. Google says no additional structured data is required for its AI features, but that it helps content be understood and must match the visible text (Google Search Central). We call this passage-level citability.

Scope of the service: three workstreams

Our GEO consultancy begins with an audit, continues with content and entity architecture, and runs on measurement; we do not recommend GEO work without measurement.

AI visibility audit

The audit builds a panel of 50–100 prompts per target language: brand-name, category, comparison, problem-led and local questions. Each is run in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews / AI Mode, Gemini and Copilot, recording mentions, citations, context (positive, neutral, wrong) and which competitors are cited instead.

We then trace causes: your top 20 pages are scored for passage-level citability, robots.txt and llms.txt are reviewed crawler by crawler, Organization, Person and Service markup and sameAs links are validated, and brand facts across the open web are compared. Every gap is tied to a cause and set into a 30-day plan with owners.

GEO content and entity architecture

The architecture map names one responsible page per question cluster and gives it the structure the question demands: a definition block, a comparison table, a step list or an FAQ section. Existing content is mostly restructured rather than rewritten; missing topics are produced natively in Turkish, English, Arabic and Persian.

On the entity side, brand name, description, founders, locations and service list are defined once and mirrored into Organization, Person and Service markup, sameAs-linked profiles and directory listings. Third-party mentions are prioritised by source quality; no bulk directory submissions, no paid links.

AI search measurement

Measurement re-runs the panel on a schedule and tracks share of citations (the proportion of panel answers citing you as a source), brand mention rate and position relative to competitors, reported per language and per platform, because being cited in ChatGPT and absent from Perplexity is common.

We add GA4 referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, Copilot and Gemini and its conversion behaviour. Otterly.AI, Profound or Ahrefs Brand Radar can scale the panel; a small manual panel is a legitimate start.

/10 · Method and process

How we run a GEO engagement

Six steps; the first three take four to six weeks, the rest run quarterly.

  1. 01

    Question discovery and prompt panel

From sales notes, support tickets, Search Console queries and competitor analysis we extract the questions buyers put to AI assistants: 50–100 per language across brand, category, comparison and problem-led prompts.

  2. 02

    Baseline measurement

The panel is run across five platforms; for every answer we record mention, citation, context and competing sources. Each prompt is run several times and averaged. The result shows the gaps by platform, language and question type.

  3. 03

    Cause analysis and audit report

Passage-level citability, crawler access, structured data and entity consistency are examined and every gap is tied to a cause. Recommendations are scored by impact and effort and set into a 30-day plan.

  4. 04

    Content and entity architecture implementation

Pages are restructured against the map: definition blocks, tables and FAQ sections added, schema corrected, robots.txt opened to search crawlers, brand facts aligned. Production runs natively in four languages.

  5. 05

    Third-party mentions and source work

We identify the directories, industry publications and comparison content that engines trust and run a prioritised plan to get your brand represented there. No bulk submissions, no paid links.

  6. 06

    Re-measurement and iteration

The panel is re-run quarterly, monthly for critical questions; share of citations, mention rate and AI-referral traffic are reported and the plan is updated.

/11 · Tools and platforms

Platforms and crawler policies

Each platform has its own retrieval path and crawler tokens; we document policy per platform, never with one rule.

  • ChatGPT (OpenAI)

Search results indexed by OAI-SearchBot, user-requested pages fetched by ChatGPT-User, training through GPTBot (OpenAI documentation). Our recommendation: search and user access open, training decided separately.

  • Perplexity

PerplexityBot indexes; Perplexity-User fetches on request. Its prominent source list makes citations and competing sources easy to see.

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Both draw on the Google index; no separate markup is needed and snippet controls apply (Google Search Central). The Google-Extended token governs the Gemini side.

  • Gemini

Fed by Google's index and knowledge graph, so entity consistency shows most clearly here. Behaviour in Turkish, Arabic or Persian prompts can differ; we measure it separately.

  • Microsoft Copilot

Built on the Bing index; confirm indexing in Bing Webmaster Tools before expecting Copilot visibility.

  • Measurement tools

Otterly.AI, Profound, Ahrefs Brand Radar and manual prompt panels; we cross-check tool data against our own panel.

/12 · Measurement and KPIs

Measurement and KPIs: how we report AI visibility

Panel-based indicators that show direction; none is promised at a level, and every figure is an average of repeated runs.

  • Citations

    Share of citations

Panel answers citing you as a source, split by platform, language and question type.

  • Mentions

    Brand mention rate and context

Answers naming your brand, and whether the mention is positive, neutral or wrong.

  • Traffic

    AI-referral sessions and conversions

GA4 sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, Copilot and Gemini, and their conversion behaviour.

  • Coverage

    Citability and entity coverage

Question clusters with a responsible page, pages passing the citability threshold, entity sources that agree.

Limitations: what GEO cannot promise

Answer engines are not deterministic. The same prompt on the same day can cite different sources; personalisation, location and session history change the result. No agency can commit to you being cited for a given question, and we do not. We commit to a measurable method and a panel re-run the same way every quarter.

Retrieval and citation logic is not publicly documented. Google and OpenAI publish crawler behaviour and some principles, not why one passage is chosen over another. Our method rests on published documentation, observable behaviour and our own panel data; it makes no claim to have reverse-engineered a citation algorithm.

Measurement is a sample: a panel of 50–100 prompts tracks a representative slice of what buyers ask, and single-number "AI visibility scores" differ from one tool to the next, so our reports always state the panel definition, the number of runs and the date. AI-referral traffic is, for most sites today, small next to organic search, and assistants do not always show a clickable source; the effect often appears in direct traffic, brand searches and "we saw you in ChatGPT" in a sales call. Platforms change quickly, so the crawler behaviours here reflect their documentation at the time of writing.

/14 · Common challenges

Common challenges in GEO projects

  • Bot protection blocking search crawlers

Cloudflare or WAF rules can block OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot regardless of robots.txt. We verify with external user-agent probes and fix the rule.

  • Content written as marketing copy

Text built from adjectives such as "industry-leading" is not cited as a passage. Restructuring usually beats new content.

  • Entity inconsistency across languages

If the brand name or service list differs between Turkish, English and Arabic sources, models can treat them as separate entities. One record per language, connected through hreflang.

  • Getting into lists and directories

For "best X" questions, engines synthesise listicles and directories; appearing there takes time and is not fully in your control.

  • Over-reliance on tool data

Tools produce different scores with different methods. Our own panel is the reference; tools are for scale.

How SEO Evaluate approaches GEO

This page follows the structure we recommend: a definition block first, then a comparison table, an FAQ and Service markup that matches the visible content. For clients we prepare a crawler policy that documents search, user-initiated and training access separately.

We put GEO on top of SEO, not in place of it: crawling and indexing from technical SEO, citable content from editorial production, entity work from digital PR, measurement from the analytics setup. We do not promise numbers for something we have not measured; we share the baseline, re-measure at quarter end and report the difference with its causes. Our work concentrates on Türkiye, the Gulf and Europe, tracking Turkish, English, Arabic and Persian questions in one panel.

/18 · Frequently asked questions

GEO and AI search visibility: frequently asked questions

What is GEO?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making your content retrievable, understandable and citable by generative answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini. It covers passage-level citable content, consistent entity signals, structured information, search-crawler access and prompt-based measurement, and it builds on classic SEO.

What does a GEO agency or AEO agency actually do?

As a GEO agency we measure your AI visibility with prompt panels, report the gaps with their causes, implement an architecture that makes content and brand entity citable, and re-measure every quarter. An AEO agency focuses on being the source for specific questions, one part of the same programme; generative engine optimization services, AI search optimization and LLM visibility are other names for this method.

What is the difference between GEO, AEO and SEO?

SEO aims to rank a page for a query and win the click. AEO aims to be the source of the answer to a specific question, in featured snippets, People Also Ask and AI Overviews. GEO aims to be cited and described accurately inside the longer answers synthesised by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Mode, adding entity consistency, third-party mentions and crawler policy.

Can you promise that we will be cited?

No. Nobody can, and an offer that does is not asking the right question. Answer engines are probabilistic, their source selection is undocumented and results change with personalisation. What we commit to is a documented panel, a baseline, a plan with explicit causes and a quarterly re-measurement using the same method, so you see what changed and why in your own data.

How is AI search visibility measured?

A panel of 50–100 prompts per target language is run regularly across five platforms; for each answer we record mention, citation, context and competing sources, and calculate share of citations and mention rate. In GA4, AI-referral traffic is tracked as its own channel. Each prompt is run several times and averaged.

How long does it take to see results?

Crawler access and structured-data fixes are reflected within weeks; OpenAI documents that robots.txt changes are picked up in roughly 24 hours. Content restructuring and entity consistency show over one to two quarters; third-party mentions take longer.

Which content gets cited?

A definition that answers the question in the first sentence, passages readable without surrounding context, concrete names, steps and tables, a visible date and author, and sourced claims. Product listings and promotional copy are rarely cited, so we restructure existing pages first.

Does schema markup matter for AI search?

Google states that no additional markup is required for AI Overviews and AI Mode, but that structured data helps content be understood and must match the visible text (Google Search Central). Organization, Person, Service and FAQPage markup supports entity consistency and question extraction; it does not produce a citation on its own.

What changes in multilingual AI search?

Engines look for sources in the user's language; your English page is rarely the source for an Arabic question. Every target language needs a citable page and consistent entity information in that language, and we report Turkish, English, Arabic and Persian results separately.
