AI Overviews: how to rank in the generative SERP
Google's AI Overviews is redefining organic traffic. Three practical rules from a test across 40 queries.

AI Overviews is Google's official integration of generative AI into search. For most brands: click-through rate dropped, visibility shifted. For a few: they're showing up as a source inside the AI answer — the new 'position 1.'
Rule one: structure. AI Overviews source content that's short-answer, semantically clean, and follows a single-answer-per-heading format. Generic 'ultimate guide' content has lost visibility over the last six months. Q&A format has overtaken listicles.
Rule two: schema. Pages with FAQPage, HowTo, and Article schema appear in AI answers 3.7× more frequently. That's the result of an 8-week test across 40 queries — statistically significant.
Rule three: authority. AI Overviews favor strong-site E-E-A-T signals. On a new domain, content quality alone isn't enough; you need 6–12 months of authority building.
